Spring and autumn get all the attention, but every season in Bhutan has something to offer. Here is how weather, festivals, trekking conditions and crowd levels change month by month.

Spring (March – May)

Warm days, blooming rhododendron and jacaranda, and the huge Paro Tshechu. This is peak season, so book flights and hotels early.

Summer (June – August)

The monsoon brings afternoon rain and cloud that can hide the mountains, but the valleys are lush and green, prices drop, and the crowds disappear. Good for culture-focused trips, less so for trekking.

Autumn (September – November)

The clearest skies of the year, ideal trekking conditions, and back-to-back festivals including Thimphu Tshechu. The other peak season.

Winter (December – February)

Cold in the high valleys but bright and quiet. Punakha and the lower south stay mild, and this is the season to see black-necked cranes in Phobjikha.
