What to Pack for Bhutan: A Layered Approach
Tranquil Tours & Treks | January 12, 2026

Mountain weather changes fast and altitudes vary widely across a single itinerary. A simple layering system covers almost every situation, from a warm afternoon in Punakha to a frosty dawn at a trek camp.
Packing for Bhutan is mostly an exercise in managing temperature swings within a single day. A morning at a 3,000 metre pass and an afternoon in a subtropical valley can be 20 degrees apart.
The system
- Base: two or three merino or synthetic t-shirts, one long-sleeve
- Mid: a light fleece and a warmer insulated jacket
- Shell: a packable waterproof, useful even outside monsoon
- Legs: quick-dry trousers; one warm pair for evenings
Footwear
Broken-in walking shoes or light boots with grip for the Tiger's Nest stairs. Sandals for the hotel.
Don't forget
Sunscreen and a hat (the UV at altitude is fierce), a refillable water bottle, a modest layer for temple visits, and any personal medication, since pharmacies outside Thimphu are limited.
