Hiking to the Tiger's Nest: A Practical Guide
Tranquil Tours & Treks | February 18, 2026

Everything you need to know before climbing to Paro Taktsang — fitness expectations, what to wear, the best time of day to start, and how to make the most of the monastery once you arrive.
The hike to Paro Taktsang, better known as the Tiger's Nest, is the single most requested experience in Bhutan. The monastery sits at 3,120 metres on a cliff face above the Paro valley, and reaching it means gaining roughly 900 metres over about 6 kilometres round trip.
How hard is it?
Most reasonably active travellers complete the climb in 2 to 3 hours at a steady pace. The trail is wide and well graded to the halfway teahouse, then becomes a series of stone staircases across the gorge. Ponies can carry you as far as the teahouse but not beyond.
When to start
Begin by 8am. You will walk in shade for the first hour, beat the day-tripper crowds, and have soft morning light for photos of the monastery from the viewpoint.
What to bring
- Layers — it is cold at the trailhead and warm once you are climbing
- 1.5 litres of water and a snack
- Trekking poles if your knees dislike stairs
- A scarf or shawl to enter the temple respectfully
Cameras and bags are checked in lockers at the entrance, so the inner shrines are experienced without a lens between you and them.
